Today’s work didn’t begin with a plan; it was all play. Drawing, ripping, layering. A new surface, a different way of drawing, with marks layered over marks, just all fun. Play inspires me
. There’s something freeing about letting a piece become instead of forcing it to arrive. When I try new techniques, I step outside the part of myself that wants control. I don’t want to ask Is this good? Will this work? Instead, I try to listen to the ‘What if?’
Play matters because it removes pressure. It permits me to explore without needing to explain. To make something that might never be finished, never be shared, or never be repeated. It may become part of my process, which can change.
Exploration reminds me that creativity isn’t about mastery. It’s about the relationship with my art supplies, with intuition, and with the present moment. Trying something new keeps me curious and focused on possibility, and sometimes, that’s exactly where the most meaningful work begins.
Most of the time, I start by playing in a sketchbook, but today it was with loose watercolor paper. I wound up with a nice stack that I can use as collage and as inspiration to start a new work. I have five pieces that I finished and thought I would share one. I know this is quite the departure from the last piece I shared, but I am curious what you think. How do you guys play and find inspiration?
