Many years ago, the beginning of a career as a creative was just given to me one day on a silver platter. It’s like a doorway was magically opened in front of me and I decided to walk through it because it was an answer to one of my prayers. My cake decorating instructor met me one day towards the end of my taking classes with her and offered for me to take over her classes. She had already talked to the store manager and the job was mine if I wanted it. I wondered how she knew that I prayed for something like this. Did an angel whisper to her soul that I needed my own separate identity outside of the house away from being a caregiver?
I had been struggling with how I could go back to work after moving to Texas. Nursing is one of those kinds of jobs where you cannot clock out and leave unless there is enough support in the form of staff that can relieve you of your shift. There has been a shortage in the medical field for such a long time now. There have been many times that I was made to stay for another shift because we didn’t have the staff to cover.
How would I get a babysitter for Paul without my family living here? How could I leave for not just a normal shift but for the possible extended hours? Why would I hand my whole check over to someone else? As a mother to a handicapped child, I need a special babysitter in order for me to work outside the home. Leaving my home to be a nurse and hiring a nurse to come in didn’t make sense. It was easier for me to just provide all of Paul’s care.
I was told I would start teaching on my own schedule that I could dictate because I had full control of my own schedule. The classes were only 2 hours long, which was perfect for me and was also the perfect amount of time for my son Taylor to babysit. I could schedule the classes back-to-back on my husband’s day off if I needed to set them up that way.
This was the first time in my life I was offered a position without applying for it and all I had to do was say yes. I looked at her and blinked a few times and blindly agreed before asking her what I needed to do. She told me that I needed to bring my official papers verifying who I was and fill out the paperwork for the store. She shared her schedule so I could begin to sit in on her classes again.
I called my husband and told him I was offered a job and accepted it. He laughed because this job was right up my alley. I have always been creative, baked, and decorated cakes weekly. This was a creative teaching job where I could play with icing all day and show people how much fun it was. As soon as I got into the training, I received a call from another store that needed my help in teaching at their location as well. I figured I could juggle my time and make it work and I did. It was so sweet how everything fell into place so fast for me to work. Sometimes things work out in a way that it makes you wonder. Prayers do get answered
